Welcome to Saint Vaast, the French people’s favourite village 2019
Discover here the must-sees of our beautiful village in the Manche department on the Cotentin peninsula. Between fishing and yachting port, beaches and water sports, the sea is omnipresent in Saint Vaast la Hougue.
Enjoy walks and beaches only 300m from the La Gallouette campsite. To get there, nothing could be simpler, take the footpath that joins La Hougue. Certainly the first visit which will be advised to you by our team and by the Cotentin tourist office if you wish to make tourism in Saint Vaast!
The Hougue Tower
Emblem of Saint Vaast, this tower was built in the 17th century by Vauban to protect the most beautiful roadstead in France from the English invasions, following the battle of La Hougue in 1692. You can visit it and walk around its fortified enclosure by following the coastal path (GR223). The Tour de la Hougue, or Hougue Fort, and the Tour de Tatihou, located on the island of Tatihou, are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Two apiaries were installed at the foot of the Hougue in 2017 and now allow the production of Vauban / La Hougue honey.
The island of Tatihou
At high or low tide, admire Tatihou Island from Saint Vaast. Depending on the tidal coefficient, cross the island on foot, through the oyster beds or set out to conquer it aboard the amphibious boat, the Tatihou 2. This island, with its “pirate” atmosphere, has regained its calm and is now a bird sanctuary. On the spot, let yourself be charmed by the botanical garden and dream in the maritime museum. After visiting the gardens and the maritime museum, enjoy the magnificent view of the Val de Saire from the top of the island’s Vauban Tower. The twin tower of La Hougue, these two architectural jewels are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
The port of Saint Vaast, a charming port of call
The port of Saint-Vaast-La-Hougue, located just 200 metres from the La Gallouette campsite, is a charming haven of peace for yachtsmen and is also the main fishing port on the east coast of the Cotentin. Fishing professionals and yachtsmen are in perfect harmony with the maritime environment around the campsite. Nestling in the heart of the town, the port of Saint-Vaast-La-Hougue is home to a maritime heritage: old rigging and schooners…
On the horizon, you can contemplate Tatihou Island with the Pointe de Saire and Jonville beach as a backdrop, and further offshore, the Saint-Marcouf Islands and Ile du Large.
The Oyster of Saint Vaast
When the sea withdraws naturally, it reveals the oyster beds of Saint Vaast la Hougue. Situated between the small beach of Saint Vaast and Tatihou, or in the bay of Morsalines, the oyster beds are home to the oyster of Saint-Vaast, a true local know-how recognised thanks to its unique iodised taste. In this maritime setting on the east coast of the Cotentin, after low tide, which gives way to the pleasures of fishing on foot, high tide offers a completely different landscape.
You can enjoy the culinary specialities of the Val de Saire in the restaurants in the town centre of Saint Vaast. Among the flagship products, you will of course find fresh fish, oysters and shellfish of all kinds. But also the famous Tatihou lamb, puff pastry brioche, Normandy biscuits or Val de Saire vegetables…
“Le Sentier des Douaniers”
The GR 223 is undoubtedly one of the best known in Normandy for hikers. From Saint Vaast la Hougue, you can walk along the coast to the Pointe de Barfleur and discover most of the tourist places of the Cotentin and the former Lower Normandy region such as the Gatteville lighthouse, the Pointe de Saire or the Tour de la Hougue.
